Grand Junction is the largest city on Colorado's Western Slope

Grand Junction Colorado serves as a hub for transportation and shipping between Denver and Salt Lake City. The population of the Grand Junction area is 147,000. In the late 19th century, settlers were drawn to the fertile Grand Valley for its agricultural potential, and the area remains one of Colorado's largest food producers, including peaches, pears, cherries and corn. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the first grape vines were planted, sparking an increase in wine production. Now is home to more than 20 wineries, Grand Junction is known as Colorado's wine country. The warm days and cool nights are exceptional conditions for producing hearty grapes, and red wine varietals in particular flourish in the conditions. In addition to food production, the Grand Junction area includes unparalleled natural beauty. The Colorado National Monument is an outdoor lover's paradise, offering trails for hiking and biking, as well as incredible views of red rock canyons and stone monoliths jutting straight up from the ground. The nearby Grand Mesa is a spectacular flat-top mountain that plateaus near 10,000 feet. It offers a variety of activities year-round, including skiing in the winter and hiking, hunting, fishing and biking in the summer.

Adventure on the Riverfront Trails

The Colorado Riverfront Trail System celebrates and preserves the cottonwood groves, wetlands, cattail marshes, gravel bars and islands of the Colorado (originally the Grand) and the Gunnison Rivers. The junction of these two mighty rivers provides a beautiful and rich habitat for wildlife and riparian vegetation in an otherwise arid region. This rich and diverse environment is home for over 200 different species of birds, three endangered species of fish and an abundance of small animals. The trail system provides many recreational opportunities to walkers, bikers, skaters, joggers and fisherman.

Grand Junction Colorado Mesa University

Founded in 1925, Colorado Mesa University is a comprehensive regional public higher education institution offering liberal arts, professional, and technical programs at the master's, bachelors, associate and certificate levels. Colorado Mesa University has an enrollment of more than 9,480 students with almost 12 percent of the University's student body coming from outside Colorado. The student population is 54 percent female, 46 percent male, and 20 percent from traditionally underrepresented groups. The vast majorities of students - 73 percent - are traditional-aged students and enrolled in full-time study. Many students attend college while also working and caring for families, and Colorado Mesa is proud to offer evening, online and distance education classes that allow non-traditional and working students the opportunity to further their educational attainment and advance in their professions.
